I turned from finalist to awardee last night (330am, LA time) when my sister called me to say that I won! I asked her to receive the award on my behalf. I wanted to be there to make a speech. (Tony Perez, the other awardee took his time making one).
There are so many things I wanted to say about the state of Philippine literature. Things that I wanted to achieve when I began writing my book. Like one can write "literature" using colloquial Filipino. That maybe, it's about time to rethink the short story medium regarding theme, and well, length. I also wanted to say that one need not win a literary award like the Palanca Awards to get published.
The 2006 National Book Award, Short Fiction Category for Pagluwas is my FIRST literary award.

 | Congratulations, Imo! You absolutely deserve it. It's a very well-written book.
So totoo lang, nung nagpa-otograp ako sa iyo ng libro mo, na-inspire ako lalo tapusin ang sinusulat ko. I spent 2004-2005 in Italy and the place somehow awoke the writer in me. I've been writing seriously since then, and i've had two short stories published in a couple of lifestyle magazines already. I'm almost done with the book and i hope to get that published soon.
Your decision to write in colloquial Filipino is very inspiring as well. Medyo Inglisero ako pag nagsusulat pero gusto ko ring ma-master ang Tagalog. I find Bulaqueño Tagalog to be the most eloquent.

| Salamat at nainspire ka sa Pagluwas. Sige lang, sulat lang. When I started writing my book, wala naman akong ambisyon talaga. Gusto ko lang makita kung kaya kong makasulat ng libro. Noong natapos na, saka ko na pinroblema yong paglalako sa mga publishing house. Actually, sa UP Press lang naman ako nagpadala at pinalad akong in two months i got a reply na nagustuhan ng mga readers (the Jun Cruz Reyes at Lilia Quindoza Santiago). I got to know these writers later on. Partly, I owe the success of Pagluwas to them.

Please let me know where, so that I can get a copy and read your obra maestra (for now -- I'm sure you will have more).

Available yan sa lahat ng bookstores (National Bookstore, Powerbooks, Fully-booked, etc.) A few weeks back, I asked a friend to buy me copies of my book sa National Bookstore/Powerbooks kasi pupunta siya ng LA. She only got me two copies kasi lagi daw out of stock. Sabi ko, baka 2-3 copies lang talaga ang meron sila, hehehe.
Panigurado, meron niyan sa UP Press Store, sa Bahay Kalinaw sa UP.

| I went to Fully Booked in Rockwell to look for "Pagluwas" this afternoon, but they didn't have it in their file. Then I went to National, where it was in the computer, but no longer on the shelves. Looks like the award has helped your sales, Imo! Congratulations! :-) |

The Press must have been doing their job in terms of PR. In any case, di naman ako kikita masyado kung ma-sold out ang book.
